A Motivated, energetic, and productive employees: Nature or Nurture ?

The success of a high-performance organization lies in the people. Even the most advanced technology or the organization as a whole is planned to fail if adopted and supported by the people. Thomas Watson Jr. (IBM President 1951 through 1972), says "I believe that the real difference between success and failure in a corporation can very often be traced to the question of how well the organization brings out the great energies and talents of its people

(1). So how do organizations create and maintain a diverse workforce and productive? should focus on selecting the most suitable employees intrinsically motivated to do their best? Or should the organization put resources do not need to motivate them for the workforce? intrinsic motivation caused by an interest or enjoyment in the task itself, and exists within the individual rather than relying on external factors or gift. external motivation, on the other hand, refers to the performance to get a result. External motivation can be internalized by the individual if the task in accordance with the values and beliefs, and helping to meet their psychological motivations needs.Extrinsic employees in the organization is governed by three main variables: the age of employees, type of work, and the situation requires employees tend to be younger motivated by . career opportunities, independence in work, training and development, and recognition. The most effective motivator for employees aged job security, monetary incentives, and recognition. Older workers most effectively driven by job security, a positive work environment, and recognition. As we can see, the "confession" is the common denominator for all age groups. The paper money as a motivator differ significantly according to the type of job. Research by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology shows that when the work involves only mechanical skill, monetary incentives are an effective motivator. However, when a job requires cognitive skills, the effects of monetary incentives release. Even more, monetary incentives can have severe side effects, and reduce the performance of the employee (Pink, 2010)

(2). The findings of this research is something to think about for the future management of the organization to try to motivate them with high bonuses ... motivator in situations such as lagging economy or a strong family situations can also affect the extent to which an employee is motivated by monetary incentives compared to other organizational factors, such as recognition and awards. Organizations can observe two types of employee motivation. From the perspective of intrinsic motivation, organizations can choose the best that suits the natural tendency of employees in accordance with the processes and requirements of a particular position. When the interests of employees with the type of work, preferences, and behaviors, an employee tends to point better. From do not need motivation, employers can use the recognition and awards. Some awards are the most effective strategies is also very cheap or free. For example, write "thank you" note or letter to an employee does not take much time, but it can work wonders in improving employee motivation. Identification and estimation of other strategies can be gift cards, performance certificates, licenses, office breakfast, or win a holiday surprise. Celebrate the employee, such as graduations, can be an effective approach motivation as well. Most importantly, appreciation and respect for the honest, and the leader not only act, but also believe that humans are the most important asset. So, employees are motivated, energetic, and productive determined by nature or groom he formed the organizational skills? The answer may be "both." While our personality, experience, and common role in attitude of how much we are motivated to do their best, do not affect the ability of our organization needed motivation, productivity and consequently significantly degree.Thomas J. Sponsorship Right for My Company?

The trade show is Bonaza sponsorship opportunities. Talk with any show organizer, and they were more than happy to explain how you can make sure your company name and logo plastered all over the arena, the program guide, a good deal more than the suite, even tote bags everyone carries around all day. It's just a simple matter of money - lots of money. Spend enough, and some conferences, you can get a seat in event planning committee. Is cash all worth it? How do you know the right sponsors for your company? Is there a way to determine if underwriting aspects of a trade show will help the bottom line? Absolutely.First, it is important to understand what the sponsor is. Sponsorship is the financial or in kind support of an activity, used primarily to reach specified business goals. The fact that the sponsor will be made to achieve specific business goals deliniates clear of charity - you will not be able to write off your trade show participation as a charitable contribution.

However, sponsors are also very different from advertising. Sponsorship is not a solo adventure, the way advertising. It promotes the company in respect sponsee. The next step is to determine why you might want to sponsor the event. Beware of the CEO-trap. This happens when the CEO is a fan of a particular sport or event, and want to throw corporate dollars behind his personal passion. Throwing the car company's logo on his favorite NASCAR could make a big man happy, but it will help your company? Instead, you will want to set some clear, measurable goals for your sponsor company. There are six main reasons why companies embrace sponsorship, including image enhancement, driving sales, increasing visibility with positive publicity, to get a "Good Corporate Citizen" role, to differentiate from the competition, and to improve the business, consumer and VIP relations. All of these are valid reasons.

Assess the proposed sponsorship opportunities towards their goals and ask yourself if you are sponsoring aspects of this event will enhance your company's image. Many companies appreciate the goodwill generated by the sponsor hospitality suites and specialty food trade shows - good intentions that may affect sales. If sponsor aspects of the trade show will meet one or more of these purposes, you may want to participate. It is a good idea to do some homework first, before you sign on the dotted line.Check out the pictures show. Is seen as a classy, up-scale event? Or does it have a reputation for less-than-stellar? You'll want to know this before you affiliate yourself with the event. Show organizers should be able to provide the target audience expected to attend, plan media coverage of the event, and what your obligations as a sponsor. You will also want to know what kind of support you can expect from the event organizers, and what exactly your sponsorship dollars buying.

Don afraid to ask the tough questions. You are developing a short-term partnership with the trade show organizer. Approach in the same way you would evaluate any other potential business relationship. You need to know the operational history of the event. 'll Show has been around for a while, and continues to grow every year, or is it a new company? Sponsored anyone before? How much they pay to get involved? What is the origin of organized? They are affiliated with non-profit organizations or political? Check the date of the event, and check to make sure it does not conflict with other events at the company you want to have a presence. You also must be equipped with a full and complete list of event attractions, including educational programs and receptions.Sponsorship works best in the context of relationships. You will often see the same companies that support the same events year after year. Synergy creates a special, unique 'brand' for the event, purchasing the brand began to rely on and expect. Be sure to inquire about on-going sponsorship opportunities, as well as cross promotion opportunities.Don not dilute your brand by sponsoring every event that comes. Can you be selective here.

Choose one or two events that most closely mirror your company's image and philosophy - they are shows that will help you meet your sponsor goals.Once, you have made up your mind what want to be affiliated with the event, contact the event organizers immediately. Many sponsorship opportunities are very competitive, and space is limited. There is not much time to linger if you want one of only two or three premier spots. Finally, do not feel limited to what the show organizers offer sponsorship opportunities. If you have a good idea, talk to the organizers about it. Maybe the organizers will meet your creativity, and they are more than willing to accommodate your plans.

To Buy or Not to Buy?

Some of these costs are no-brainers - food, shelter, warmth. The other is a seemingly endless source of doubt and excuses: morning latte, new stainless flatware, long-dreamed of a trip to Thailand. This is a cost that can leave us (me) anxiety and conflict.

Despite the old saying goes, the research suggests that money can buy happiness, so as to understand how to make the most of scarce dollars in discretionary effort worth making, say experts in the burgeoning field of positive psychology. "If Money Does not Make You Happy, Then You Probably Do not spend it Right" is the title of an article co-created by Harvard professor Daniel T. Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness sellers nationwide. Among the findings reported:

Purchases made with the main objective to get the experience of life to take action in order to get a good thing or matter.

Expenditures to improve our relationships with others, such as buying a gift for a friend or take them out to dinner, get happiness outsized return.

Small, the pleasure is often a better bet than fewer big-ticket splurges.

However, these rules only take you so far. While research findings speak to the customs statistics, they do not always talk to you. That is why the writer Laura Vanderkam advice carefully tracking what really makes you happy, because he himself has taken to doing. "Today, I bought a little pleasure, such as lattes and flowers, and spend even more money and gather with friends. I spend more on something if I could identify a particular owner or creative types who can benefit from my purchase, "he writes in the new book All the Money in the World: What is the Happiest People Know About Getting and spending.

[Related: The Secret to Living Well on Less]

A few years ago, personal finance professor David Bach, author of The Automatic Millionaire and other bestsellers, the sound made by coining the term factor (now-trademark) Latte to describe what he viewed as a typically American tendency to waste almost $ 1 million copies and other short courses for life. But along with the fiscal questionable assumption - return 10 percent certainty, anyone? - This attitude is not considered significant and sustained native small pleasures of everyday life. "[A] cross different domains, happiness is more strongly related to the frequency rather than the intensity of positive human affective experience," Harvard Gilbert and his co-authors Forrester.

That said, for all the values identified from small everyday pleasures, we tend to consider the occasional big-ticket items. In this case, I find it useful to use this fantastic query adapted from blogger Havi Brooks: "The purchase is likely to make life better for the Future Bit Me?" For that reason I do not quite understand, he tends to leave me more clearly. I also try to remind myself that, while I make the best decision, I can not guarantee how I choose to play. As with all investments, portfolio joy I need a certain level of risk. My tolerance of risk assessment should be part of the equation.

[Related: Welcome to Plan B Nation]

Based on reflection and calculation, finally I began a long-awaited planning Thailand. (I added taking inspiration from the studies cited by Vanderkam hope that the holidays increase the level of happiness for eight weeks.) Ditto to get a new set of cutlery: Yes, the rate is one thing, but on the other hand, it will be part of everyday experience, and I'm pretty sure that in this way will give regular lifts my spirit - as pot dish that I bought years ago are still doing food.

Currently, my favorite coffee shop is a place in my budget. Though of course the cost of a latte, he buys happiness is priceless.

Google Apps for Your Business: The Good, the Bad and the ugly

In case you had not noticed, this is not the world of Bill Gates' again. Of course, Microsoft remains the dominant provider of office software, with 450 million users deployed, according to data from the company. But downcoast rival, Mountain View, California-based Google, Microsoft has broken the lock on the office software products. More than 2 million businesses and 25 million users when dealing with their e-mail, documents and other office tasks using a web-based professional office suite, Google Apps.

And for good reason.

Google Office offers a bewildering variety of cloud-based productivity options for even the smallest company: basically all you do in the workplace is now available anywhere, any time, from any online connection. Better yet, all of this is free for standard versions - or $ 50 per year per user for the Premier version, which includes additional storage and a high-quality, limited support.

And Google has just begun. In April the company quietly overhauled Apps, dramatically change the user interface and improve the core code of the software. New Apps supports the development of a third party even Google Apps Marketplace.

If you do not have access to the web is great, you better off working with a traditional word processor such as Microsoft Word or OpenOffice. But if you use the internet and your company is not Google Apps-savvy right at this moment, you make mistakes.

Here are our choices for the big, not-so-great and I really spectacular small business tool:

Big Tool

Google Apps Gmail

What is love:

The foundation of any small business, Google Apps Gmail supports URL of your company and look the same from any web browser or mobile device. For example, it instantly turns your iPod Touch into an even job portals. Plus, Gmail has a lot of e-mail space for each employee, with 25 GB of storage per user (paid Apps account). Employees complete the remote access, and the system requires them to be logged in to do their jobs, total liabilities. Gmail conversations "with yarn," unlike most desktop e-mail client, which means the e-mail subject line are grouped both, which makes it easier to keep track of complex, multi-party exchange.

What is hate:

Google's approach to log in and manage e-mail when complicated identity. Even worse, the employees often have trouble telling if they are logged in to the virtual system company e-mails or their own personal Gmail account. Also, ready to be bombarded by advertising-supported content. Text ads are the core business of Google, so you pretty much always see them. Some may be related, but many companies will be cautious about opening their own company e-mail marketers, even anonymously.

Productivity factors:

Incredible. If you are not using Google Apps Gmail account in Microsoft Outlook, you are either a novice or a fool. But be forewarned: This is not a complete replacement for Outlook.

Google Apps Calendar

What is love:

Apps Calendar to create a common platform on which to schedule appointments and events across the enterprise in real time. It enables the executive assistant to schedule an appointment 'from a remote location, and allows you to update your client meetings because they need to - again, as happens. Quite simply, when it comes to the work of the team, the scheduling tool of God - even generate an e-mail invitation that includes a button to respond. When employees stated they attend, Apps Calendar is automatically added to schedule a meeting with you and them. It also allows you to combine the calendar hiring you to set up your entire team bird's.

What is hate:

Apps such as Gmail, Calendar can be confusing and complex, managing Settings Calendar work evil. And you can expect deploy other applications such as project management or LiquidPlanner Smartsheet really make the scheduling work. Also, permissions and privacy management has become difficult in our test. And, of course, other people arrange their schedules in different ways. Be warned: Integration with Outlook is useless.

Productivity factors:

No other tool out there like that. Scheduling feature alone is a must-have for small businesses. Just do not ask too much.

Google Docs

What is love:

Google Docs has earned the most recent rebuilding of Google Apps, which can solve the previous problem regarding connectivity and collaboration. Offline content creation may actually work. Collaborative word processing feature, which allows multiple parties to make changes at once, is a revelation to any creative team fast speed. Suddenly, a proposal or presentation is a task that almost-light. Forget writer's block: Real-time chat and group feedback comments put on the page, and the changes are saved automatically and frequently. You'll never see to write or edit in the same way again.

What is hate:

As cool as it is, Google Docs does not replace Microsoft Word or OpenOffice it comes to making a smooth, professional-looking documents. More troubling, connectivity is still a problem, the daunting prospect when frozen in the middle Docs store documents. And forget about using e-mail attachments and wild reliable publish-to-web features, they can be stabilized.

Productivity factors:

Docs stone. This is the best collaborative work tool on the market - and you can not beat the price.

Google AdWords

What is love:

Although technically not part of Google Apps, AdWords is still an important part of any business marketing strategy based growing. This forced the company to sterilize the value proposition in the sentence and make for how you follow up on leads from your website.

What is hate:

Do not spend more than $ 100 per month without the help of an online pro-look-long, or you'll burn money fast. AdWords is harder than it looks. Also, competitors such as Facebook and Twitter are breathing the neck leader of the online advertising market. So the market is changing rapidly.

Google Pack

What is love:

It is our sleeper pick for a Google product that works for small businesses - and the first thing you have to download when you get a new computer. The Google Pack is a free office suite that contains starter Google Chrome browser, Google Apps, and Spyware Doctor and Anti-Virus, among other Google software, including third-party applications such as Adobe Reader and Skype.

What is hate:

Not much, really. Yes, it is an obvious promotional vehicle for Google. But it is useful and gets you productive in just a few clicks. Surprisingly cold.

Productivity factors:

Easy to install and well, it's a great way to get quick Google-ized.

Not-so-big Tool

Google Presentations

What is love:

The publishing your finished product on the web or embed it in a website is instantaneous, making it easy to reach audiences around the world in an instant.

What is hate:

Google Presentation just do not have the same level of features such as PowerPoint. And for PPoint head, it will make you crazy. Design features are limited. And while you can open PowerPoint files up to 10MB, transliteration may be a clumsy way. In the text box is a poor feature updates, and sometimes get skewed layout. And prepared for the bones in your web coding skills to get the presentation to work properly, especially when working with multiple browsers.

Productivity factors:

PowerPoint 2010 is nothing to worry about.

Despite its flexibility, there are many other ways to develop more effective public space on the web, ie, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Small businesses can find Reader too complicated and busy.

Productivity factors:

Do not throw away your web development tools is not enough. Google Sites can be difficult to store small-tech experience.

What is love:

It is an attempt to reinvent the phone using the concept of a telephone number, with lots of bells and whistles. When a customer calls your Google Voice number, they get a recording while the number listed to find pings you or send it directly to voicemail. Voice also offers transcription, share messages, multiple personal greetings and some international calls cool.

What is hate:

Obviously, it's a whole lot of technology looking for a problem to solve. Ritual use of a business phone remains a respectable aspects of business life. So play around with the incoming business calls in a loop Google-branded service can automatically ticklish business proposition. And there is a problem of quality for international calls and transcription. Novelty can get old.

Productivity factors:

Not much. Your phone customer master 120 years ago. They do not change their practices today.

Google Wave / Google Buzz

What is love:

Google Wave is attempting to create a device agnostic media sharing that allows users to create real-time content to the cloud as no web browser. And Buzz brings social media arsenal products Google by allowing users to collect ideas, clips, pictures and videos online and share them among the group which anyone can comment on them. Both simply amazing technology.

What is hate:

As cutting-edge tools that teams need to understand how they work, most small businesses do not have the time or resources to train their people effectively.

Productivity factors:

Google Apps for experts only.

Terrible tool

Google Spreadsheets

What is love:

Not much. It was a big disappointment for Google Apps. Sure, you get a basic spreadsheet functions and some cool tricks (such as real-time updating of web data and automatic compatibility with Excel and all. Cls file xls or.), But small People here unforgettable. Nice features the autofill function allows you to avoid having to retype the same rule repeatedly, the ability to drag the column to a new location, and featuring a streamlined copy makes a duplicate in a single click.

What is hate:

It seems to work in the spreadsheet is not some holy grail thought it was. After all, most small companies will want only one or two employees to manage the accounting or sales. Also, Google Spreadsheets is actually slower than Excel, Microsoft Office programs may be the best, especially when running in 64-bit environment. Google Spreadsheets Data entry can interfere with the train, the line is sometimes disappear without warning. And freezing and thawing of the panel when complex. Fans of Microsoft Excel, prepare to be disappointed.

Productivity factors:

No. Excel is nothing to worry about.

Or LinkedIn developing automated tools to check the health of the software code. Netflix has built a large warehouse of open-source cloud computing technology. Tool to install the software package on the server preset Amazon.com 's, reconfigure them, and try them quickly. It has other applications are intentionally trying to wreak havoc on infrastructure in an attempt to find the holes and performance problems. And the code but rather to push the newest and best technology database constraints. Organizations as diverse as the Obama administration and Intel (INTC) has won this package to use in their own operations.Eventually, Netflix would open source the whole instead of releasing cool but other projects "platform." For us to collect the management of the entire cloud system software developers poke and prod and advanced. "What we are hoping that people start eating from one another," says Cockcroft. "We are all building codes to the public here."

In the past two years, regulators and business in which the company grappling derivatives trading must undergo rigorous testing as part of the Dodd-Frank financial reform. Credit default swaps and other derivatives, of course, is the main cause of the financial crisis in 2008. During the meeting, reports, hearings, and letters, they are trying to solve problems like "What is a swap dealer?" And "What is meant by 'financial entities? '"-That sounds almost existential question but with real world consequences to $ 700 trillion global derivatives regulator market.Federal make their initial proposal in 2010, said that only a small player ikakalakal less than $ 100 million per year are exempt from rules that require them to hold more capital and to report more information about their trade. Regions Financial (RF) energy giant BP (BP), and other companies that use derivatives to write and retreat. They argue that the exclusion of a broader sense as derivatives trade is highly concentrated. According to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the top five banks, JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), Morgan Stanley (MS), and Goldman Sachs (GS) hold almost 96 percent of the notional value of all derivative contracts. Joined-up approach is needed

THE launch a third round of funding for regional growth was highlighted as an ongoing problem with a lot of government intervention process as eager for new opportunities to support growth in the private sector.

It is equal to the core business of credit in the North East and Partnership Local Companies in the area that has attracted a significant proportion of recent successful bid to the Regional Growth Fun (RGF).

It does not provide some optimism that the North East will benefit from some growth in priority sectors, associated with low carbon manufacturing and engineering.

Remain concerns about the administrative processes related to RGF, about 40% of the successful bidder one round still not progressed to the operational phase.

There are some fairly chronic issue here. Offshore wind as a specific example. While NaREC continue to grow as a global leader in the research and development sector, is a risk that the development of industry and the wider economy can not keep up with the industry.

As well as excellent test equipment, construction industry also requires a skilled workforce and a lot of ground - both available in limited quantities in the region.

'New' localist landscape suited to a more market-based approach to bottom-up economic development.

No more regional economic strategy - or a national industrial strategy - that helped shape and inform investment plans and processes, both public and private sectors.

While governments argue that it provides a more stable business dynamics, it also increases the risk that the market will find a solution to other industries, other investment opportunities to take a different path to profits faster, be.

The offshore wind industry continues to be new, as there are inherent risks that pose real obstacles to private sector investment potential. Investment, in equipment such NaREC, can help to de-risk early development and encourage private sector participants in the region.

It is important, however, that the competing public policy, the program encourages development RGF priority sectors and skills investment, transport infrastructure spending and energy policy all align to complement each other for what the A once-in-a-couple holding a chance to build a new industrial economic base in the North East.

'Sleep tax' will have a major controversial

OF all the changes that the Government has announced to Welfare Reform Act, I think the potential impact of 'bed tax' is the most controversial. Due to come into effect in April 2013, the consequences of this under the new occupancy tax seems to have not fully thought out the consequences in terms of social housing tenants. In bed tax, social housing tenants of working age who receive housing benefits will receive their payments cut if they are considered under the covers of their homes. They will have to pay, on average, an extra £ 40 per month if they have a spare room, £ 70 per month if they have two, or eventually be forced to move to a smaller home. Even household where every room could use a hit cut benefits because, under the strict new rules, children of both sexes are expected to share a room until the age of 16. So tenants and housing providers will be punished for having the wrong type of house, with estimates from the National Housing Federation (NHF) said that our region can be hit with a massive and 50,000 families potentially affected. Housing associations in the North East warnings do not have enough of the right size to potentially thousands of displaced tenants. Monica said Burns, manager for the NHF North East Press recently: "Housing associations in the North East has always been driven by the government to build a larger home so that families can stay in the same house for a living and not have to move when they have children. "Now both tenants and housing associations will be punished for having the wrong kind of house." One of our members, Coast and Country Housing, warned that a large number of tenants can be pushed into poverty as a result of reducing the housing benefit for under-employment, despite the lack of a small home. CEO Iain Sim they indicated they had a real reason for concern about the effects on their tenants. I know I'm not alone in thinking that there are many aspects of this change seems unfair, unjust and frankly difficult to maintain, has not been considered by either the Government or they refuse to acknowledge. The impact on housing and tenant, not only in this area, very spacious.

Survey Highlights the public sector lags behind in payments

LOCAL councils will be asked to come clean about how long they take to pay small business suppliers. Forum of Private Business (FPB) filed a Freedom of Information Act request to the local council in the UK to ask a typical payment. Small business support organizations at last made the same exercise in 2009 when finding a postcode lottery time payment of local government. In a recent report, it was found that the board takes an average of 19 days to pay the bill - almost double the 10-day target set by the Government. More than four in 10 (42%) are not paid within 10 days, but regional variations mean that this figure is as high as 52% in some areas and as low as 11% in others. FPB senior policy advisor, McCabe Phil, said: "The public sector is the real issue final payment is where the local government is concerned, from whom many large contracts to small companies. "According to our previous freedom of information research, there has been a real postcode lottery when it is in the suppliers are paid on time - it will be interesting to see if things have improved or, given that we are back on level of the recession and the overall late payment appears to be increasing, it will be worse. ' He said that, while it is important to pay the government, it is also important that local authorities set a good example for the private sector to follow. Contract public sector is currently providing around £ 70bn of business for the private sector and the FPB calls for a change in the public procurement process, thus promoting better payment practices. This shows that the tendering process should include pre-qualification questionnaires (PQQs) payment. A recent survey with the credit agency Graydon FPB and found that one in five public sector considered a poor payer. More than half of 500 small with business owners who asked for the report said that the delay in payment is a matter for them, while nearly quarter has been identified as a serious problem. It also shows the domino effect of late payment in 56% of those not paid on time is not to pay their own suppliers. And 45% said their income is eroded by delays in payment. The survey also found that 65% of those questioned saw customers extend payment terms without notice or consultation, while one-quarter of customers withhold final payment without the approval of the first to assess the quality of work .
